Enterprise Television- Rainfall Prediction: Ogun Warns Against Indiscriminate Waste Disposal
Ogun State Government has asked residents to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal following the release of the 2018 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Bolaji Oyeleye, said residents must play a part in keeping the state flood-free by clearing their drainages and road medians.
He also cautioned motorists to drive carefully during the raining season, as the period was characterized by strong winds capable of pulling down trees, thereby causing obstructions on roads.
As revealed in the NiMet 2018 SRP, Oyeleye stated that the state might not experience severe flooding this year .
He also said that irrespective of NiMet’s prediction of severe flooding, the state was generally flood-free all through the rainy season last year, adding that this was as a result of the standard drainages that accompanied the road infrastructure constructed by the state government.
According to him, the Flood and Erosion Control Department of his ministry at the beginning of this year, embarked on the dredging of rivers and streams courses, as well as desilting of drainages in major towns in preparation for the rainy season so as to prevent flood disasters.
He warned that temperatures might be warmer than normal as the dry season peaked, and advised residents to increase their water intake from clean and hygienic water sources.
